Dr. E. Gabriel Dattatreyan is an anthropologist, filmmaker, and photographer currently teaching in the Anthropology Department, Goldsmiths, University of London. He is currently working on several projects that engage with the ways young people living in urban India articulate their aspirations and desires for a good life through popular culture consumption and social media circulation.

Gabriel is currently part of a month-long residency at TIFA Working Studios. He is here on a British Council supported project to research the cinematic cultural connections between India and postcolonial nations in Africa (Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and so on). While at TIFA, he will explore the relationship that African students in Pune have with Indian cinema while also delving into the film archives to locate a 20th century record of Africa in India and India in Africa.
