Rebecca Fernandes is an artist and teacher of live coded music with the open source platform Sonic Pi. The basis of her work lies in using accessible tools to produce music and installations. This sentiment is reflected in her digital performances and projects under the avatar, Raia. Raia creates original live coded compositions in Sonic Pi with vocal layering. As a founding member of Algorave India and through workshops and live shows, she aims to share the idea that creativity can be embraced in any aspect of one’s life. Being self taught in music and coding, she brings a unique outlook to live coding production. The resulting effect is lyrical music enveloped by code with the potential to connect with the greater public like never before.Looking to the future, Raia’s work is evolving to include strong visual elements to accompany live coded music, sonic production based on real world data, and physical interactive pieces controlled with code. A current project, ‘En(DNA)gered Species and Where to Find Them’ is a geographical soundscape of ecosystems featuring audio mnemonics created using DNA barcode data of endangered and at risk species from around the world.
